the joys of a parantha

Well..this is where my Punjabi rearing comes into play..all our lives we Punjabis are brought up on an almost steady breakfast of paranthas..the spellings may vary as per region..parauntha/parantha in U.P...parotta in Kerala..and pronthi in our household..to mark the difference between a jumbo Dhaba kind parantha and a little.. harmless one ,made at home..

so..here it is..the lowdown..a parantha ia parantha is a parantha...whatever place it is made at..
till we get to an age where we get concious about the oil and the ghee and the butter in our lives and starve ourselves ..sorry to use that word...with idlis and upmas and cornflakes and the new thing floating in the market called oats....we keep on eating and accumulating paranthas in our systems!!!!

but i'm sure none of us may say it openly..but we love those paranthas..we love to gorge on them..alu parantha..mooli parantha..gobhi parantha..paneer parantha ..to name the most popular ones...and when the acccompaniment is the sinful homemade white butter..there is no stopping us..no barriers would work..well the butter is not as sinful as it may sound..quite a lot of it is water...uh uh uh uh..before i get into a defensive mode about butter..let me get back where i started off from..aah!!the parantha..what better sunday breakfast than this..when our busy weekdays allow us those bland platefuls which do not do any justice to our taste buds...and apart from the breakfast..we would love to have a cold ..leftover parantha from the hot box..just before lunch time when its time for the next round!!!!

but but but....i must mention ..that there is nothing that can beat a plain namak ajwain parantha...and when that comes with the delectable mango pickle and a nice hot cup of tea...i feel my punjabi genes roaring and howling inside me with pride!!!!

This reminds me of my childhood when a staple tiffin food was THE parantha..with due respect..which my mum used to load with ghee and expected us little kids to finish before we reached back..my Buas..who used to reach our place after an overnight journey were welcomed with open arms..the arms looking for their "dabbas"..which had paranthas.. made before they started...the secret here is ..the paranthas kept for sometime taste even better..some magic happens during the period..i suppose..some science..

Incidentally, it was at my marital home..which is more punjabi than my parents place..where i learnt to make paranthas of all kinds and shapes and sizes..the dhaba parantha..the maharashtra parantha..the pronthi..and the like.. all the credit goes to the hubby dearest who loves his paranthas on weekdays and weekends alike..

Though i tried to introduce those idlis..and oats..and pohas...ohh..it is getting very bland...
but to my dismay...they were welcomed with cold vibes..so i had to switch my preferences to age old ..evergreen paranthas...

we ve had too much of it..in writing of course..its time to go and roll a parantha..and i'd love to have you over to try my paranthas..and yes..i can customise them..

Happy Eating`!!!

as i figure out the rights and wrongs of child rearing!!!

thanks a ton blogger for reawakening in me the lost writer .. it gives me immense happiness to re read all that i wrote eons back..and to realize that it was me who did that..
i m back again today..as i juggle between my domestic responsibilities and the vital role of a mother of a daughter..whose 4th birthday is just round the corner!!!

to begin with ..she..Anagha..is a sharp..intelligent child with a wonderful memory and a remarkable curiosity.. sometimes leaves me in a fix..those conventional solutions to child rearing are put to test ..as my mum says...you shouldnt answer her questions as much as you do..does she need to know everything..that would quieten her..

but times have changed mommy...coping up with a smart kid is not a kid's play!!!!these kids ..i tell you..verify and question everything we say or do..

with due courtesy to the information overload around them..they grow up faster and catch bits of information..when we think they are off guard..and use that information at a strategic moment!!!

i m sure most young parents would agree with me!!

so as the older set of parents..relatives ..friends and grandparents included.. shower us with invaluable suggestions..it is  constant hit and trial  to figure out which method is right and which is wrong for the child!!!  it differs for each one of them..and quite often we have to customise  methods of discipline for each one of them...

their short attention spans and our "tie them down" tendencies...we make the matters worse..
we hand them over some colors and drawing books or some colored paper and glue..expecting them to sit over it for half a day!1how foolish of us adults!!
what i have come to understand is that for their better development .we as parents need to get involved with them ourselves..sitting with them through each activity..being with them wherever they need us..as we go on taming their hyperactive brains!!

though certain conventional  and time tested methods would always work with them..like never lie..be honest..speak the truth..do not hit others..respect your elders..but we would need to do our homework to come out with methods that would fit into these deluded times!!
